Design Observer Studio Sessions October 27

On March 20, Design Observer launched a new initiative to create space for critical conversations, which have become even more necessary in this season of protest and social distancing. The Design Observer Studio Sessions continue our long-term commitment to hosting intimate and influential gatherings where we look together at the impact that design has on our lives and on the world around us.

The Design Observer Studio Sessions welcome 100 members of the extended community to engage with two leading voices in design, business, culture, and technology.

On October 27, Design Observer co-founder Jessica Helfand will discuss the future with our featured guests:

Lawrence Azerrad is a Grammy award-winning art director, graphic designer, and author who has designed packaging and album art for artists including Miles Davis and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. His new book is Mirror Sound: The People and Processes Behind Self Recorded Music, a visual portrait of the people and processes behind self-recorded music, which will be published on October 20 by Prestel.

Daniel Topete moved to New York City in 2012 with a suitcase and no contacts. He built his career by embedding himself within thriving music scenes and developing a level of trust that allowed him to capture intimate moments—an approach that still drives all of his work today. Daniel’s photos have been featured in publications such as Rolling Stone, SPIN, Stereogum, NME, and Vice; and he has shot the likes of Kurt Vile, Cage The Elephant, Whitney, Spiritualized, Twin Peaks, Big Thief, and many more.

Azerrad and Topete, along with Spencer Tweedy are co-creators of Mirror Sound. (Prestel 2020).
