“Elizabeth Hawes was a fashion leader in 1938, and a witty woman, and Alexey Brodovitch was the art director of either Harper’s Bazaar or Vogue [Harper’s Bazaar], and it was an easy pleasure to work with them. They both liked what I was doing, and the black oil-cloth binding with white silk-screen printing, giving Brodovitch’s tracery a three-dimensional effect, helped make the book elegant, charming, and effectful.”
